From 2018 to 2023, I was involved in a public history project on which I collaborated with members of the Menominee Nation, including the Tribal Historic Preservation Officer David Grignon (Nahwahquaw) and former Chair of the Wisconsin Humanities Council Arnold Chevalier (Osawen Enaemaehkiw), to install five informational plaques around the 1911 Chief Oshkosh monument in Menominee Park, Oshkosh, Wisconsin. The five plaques contextualize the life and legacy of Chief Oshkosh (1795-1858) while also interrogating and challenging the existing monument, which misrepresents both his appearance and his achievements. The five-plaque installation was approved by the Oshkosh Common Council in November, 2021, and installed by the City of Oshkosh with a re-dedication ceremony in June, 2023.
